timberland on line Adidas launches Oktoberfest beer and vomit

Adidas has launched a special pair of beer and vomit proof trainers which are sure to go down well with fans of the upcoming Oktoberfest.

German shoe company Adidas launched the new shoes just in time for the world’s most famous beer festival, which will kick off on September 16 in the Bavarian capital of Munich.

And while many Bavarian men dress up in rugged lederhosen, while women show off their cleavage in dirndls, not many locals opt for historic ‘Haferlschuhs’, the traditional Bavarian footwear, as they deem normal trainers more comfortable to dance in on the long tables in the beer tents.

They have a rich embroidery that will match similar designs found on lederhosen. The brown colours of the shoes go well with the traditional Bavarian leather breeches.

On the inside they have red and white checked tablecloth lining for what the firm calls a ‘special Alpine flavour’, as they also match the checked shirts traditionally worn by men under their lederhosen.

The word ‘prost’ (‘cheers’) printed on the shoes makes for a nice final touch.

The shoes can be bought in Germany for 200, or ordered on the British Adidas website for 159.95.

They come with a special edition 1L beer mug called ‘mass’ in which beer is traditionally served at the Oktoberfest.

Consumer Connection System (CCS) gives an insight into communication usage and engagement across bought, owned and earned digital, experiential and media channels. Owned by Aegis Media, CCS was launched 12 years ago in the UK.

Aegis Media has launched its proprietary research based tool Consumer Connections System (CCS) for the first time in India. CCS involves a study that gives the agency and its clients valuable insight into how today’s consumers choose and use media in the rapidly changing world.

CCS analyses media consumption not just by genre but also by specific channels, programmes and titles. It provides an insight into communication usage and engagement across bought, owned and earned digital, experiential and media channels.

Ashish Bhasin, chairman and chief executive officer, Aegis Media, says, “CCS is based on a communications, lifestyle and product survey conducted across 18 towns and cities across SEC A, B, C and D, thus making it the most in depth tool available in the country. It facilitates the consumer centric philosophy that we apply to strategy and communications. This is combined with insight into our clients’ brands and categories, making consumer segmentations actionable through communication.”

The study significantly focuses on digital touch points and e commerce, which is on a growth spurt in India. CCS evaluated the comfort of the consumer with e commerce and showed a growing role for e commerce in the market.

Speaking further on the study, Bhasin adds, “We have made some significant investments in this research to ensure that all clients of the Aegis Media group benefit from a deeper understanding of the rapidly changing consumer. The research was conducted across 18 cities and across 9,000 respondents to measure the consumer’s relationship with communications generically and by category.

“It measures aspects like generic channel involvement across 39 touch points (bought, owned and earned) addressing questions on recency of consumption, level of interest/enjoyment, level of attention paid to the touch point,

and level of engagement with the touch point. It also goes further into understanding the category specific channel involvement across 61 touch points (bought, owned and earned), answering queries like action as a result of noticeability and what channel facilitated post engagement, to name a few.”

According to the study focussed on the digital space, of the 18 per cent of the population (amongst SEC ABC) who have accessed the internet, 40 per cent have bought something in the last 12 months, while 48 per cent regularly research or look for products online. The top categories are Books (14.78 per cent), Clothes/Shoes/Accessories/Jewellery (12.83 per cent), and Insurance (12.5 per cent), while 10 per cent have bought groceries and other household items online. Thus, it shows a rapidly growing role for e commerce in the country, which will demand a new way to communicate with and convert potential consumers.

CCS is offered exclusively to clients of Aegis Media India and is applied to deliver enhanced communications strategy and planning, benefiting clients with improved targeting, precision and efficiencies.

Originally, the tool was launched 12 years ago in the UK. CCS has now expanded globally and is available in over 40 countries. Currently, it is active in China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and now,

timberland boys clothes Adidas unveils new 3D printed shoe

Adidas just debuted its newest shoe which has a 3D printed sole. The German company said 5,000 of the “Futurecraft 4D” shoes will be available at retail stores in the fall and winter. It plans to start mass producing them next year and expects to have made more than 100,000 pairs by the end of 2018. The company would not disclose where the shoes will be manufactured.

Adidas (ADDDF) partnered with Silicon Valley based startup Carbon to create the shoe, which uses a new technology called digital light synthesis.

3D printed materials are often rigid or malleable and wouldn’t work well for a shoe. But with Carbon’s technology, the material is springy and able to bounce back almost instantaneously.

The technology works by using UV lasers to project a pattern for a midsole liquid. The light turns the liquid into a solid and the result is a flexible, but durable, midsole.

The technology could save time and money in the production process and will allow for greater customization.

“We can produce . up to 100 times faster than other 3D printing and additive manufacturing processes,” an Adidas spokesperson told CNNTech.

Rockport Co. and Kirshenbaum Bond Partners have realized they no longer fit. The shoe marketer and the agency are parting ways as Rockport searches for a new shop.

The split is amicable; the division of Reebok International probably will seek a smaller shop closer to its Massachusetts headquarters.

The ad shows a woman in Rockport shoes walking down a city street crowded with cars, people and dogs. Yet the woman is oblivious to the noise: She hears peaceful ocean sounds. For example, a taxi horn sounds like a ship’s horn and the barking dogs, seagulls.

A LEVEL BUDGET

Part of the reason for the split may be that the account billed as $7 million when Kirshenbaum Bond won it in 1996 was supposed to have grown to $28 million by 1998, according to an executive close to both companies. But that didn’t materialize. Rockport spent $7.1 million last year and $2.4 million through May, according to Competitive Media Reporting.

Kirshenbaum likely won’t pursue another shoe account. The brand ranks No. 3 in men’s shoes and No. 14 in women’s by revenue, according to Footwear Market Insights, which pegs the total market at $38 billion. Rockport’s share in the men’s category increased slightly in 1998, to 3.7%. It dropped a bit in the women’s category, from 1.4% in ’97 to 1.2%.

Rockport is trying to spur growth with several new strategies. It opened concept boutiques within both department and athletic shoe stores last year and plans to have about 900 open by yearend. A few months ago, the company began selling golf

timberland toddler sandals Advanced Blackjack Strategy

timberland stores Advanced Blackjack Strategy

A player must first learn the basic strategies of blackjack before learning “counting”. By learning the technique of counting you will have the odds with you.

The basic concept of blackjack counting is that a deck filled with 10s and aces will be to your advantage. While the deck of the dealer is filled with smaller cards but is to the dealer advantage. Simply put, when the deck is in your favor bet to the maximum, when it with the dealer bet minimum.

This is because a deck filled with 10 increases the chance of the dealer getting bust. You on the other hand can just opt to stand. In an opposite manner, a deck filled with smaller cards makes the dealers chance to bust less. If you know the deck is filled with 10s or smaller cards, this can give you the advantage of knowing what strategy to use.

The dealer must then always hit until having a soft 17. To hit with a hand of 10 6 and knowing the deck is filled with 10s is a bad idea.

If the deck is filled with aces, there is high chance that you hit blackjack. When the player has blackjack, the pay off odds are 3:2. The dealer will only win on the other hand if he also gets a blackjack. That why a deck filled with aces is always to the player advantage.

Blackjack counting is not done by memorizing each card that has come out of a 6 deck shoe of cards. If you are able to do that, I be in awe: you should be in the world records book or maybe even the loony bin.

Blackjack card counting is done by assigning the different card numbers with different point values. Always remember to pick a system that is easy to remember. This will cause fewer mistakes and you will lose less money.

As stated above, you will assign a point value for each card and you will have to add the value of the cards that have come out. This is called the running count. Based on the plus/minus strategy, here are the values assigned.

2, 3,4,5,6 = +1;

7, 8, 9 = 0;

10, J, Q, K, Ace = 1

To illustrate this more clearly:

The first card dealt is an ace, so we start by having 1. Then 6 is the next card dealt so we add 1. This makes the run count back to zero. Then a 3 and 4 follows, making the run count now 2.

After figuring the run count, you can try to figure the true count. You take the running count you have and divide it with the number of decks remaining from the shoe. Stop by to learn about online poker gambling and play free casino games.

timberland 27094 Adidas marketing push an uphill battle against ‘cool’ Nike

timberland london Adidas marketing push an uphill battle against ‘cool’ Nike

Nike has been eating into its German rival’s market share and some branding experts and investors don’t believe throwing more cash into marketing will necessarily fix the problem.

Instead, Adidas needs to spot and set more trends and create a buzz among fashion and sports mad youngsters.

“At the moment, Nike is cool, very cool. If you ask a 20 year old, they are not going to pick Adidas right now,” said Tammy Smulders, head of marketing consultancy SCB Partners.

“It is not as easy as just writing a cheque. They need to be doing more of the viral, underground activities which brings out the cool factor of the brand.”

After recently issuing its third profit warning in a year, Adidas said on Thursday it would boost spending on marketing to about 13 percent of sales in 2014 and to between 13 and 14 percent of sales in 2015.

The company also said it would give marketing experts more responsibility and bring them closer to sales and product development staff.

Adidas spent 12.4 percent of its 2013 revenue of 14.5 billion euros ($19.4 billion) on sales and marketing, up from 12.1 percent in 2012 and already well above Nike, which spent 10.8 percent of sales of $27.8 billion in the year to May 31.

Adidas chief Herbert Hainer admitted the company, known for its three stripes logo, was being taken on even on its home turf. But he said second quarter results including double digit growth in Germany, Britain, Spain and Italy and a 41 percent jump in soccer sales showed Adidas was fighting back.

While Nike can focus on its “swoosh” logo and the “Just do it” slogan it has used since 1988, Adidas has to spread its ad budget across a range of brands such as Reebok, TaylorMade golf and Rockport shoes, as well as its Originals and NEO sports inspired fashion labels.

“They are fighting fires everywhere. Pouring money into marketing might put out some fires, but they will continue to burn elsewhere,” said Ingo Speich, a fund manager at Union Investment which has a 1.2 percent stake in Adidas and has repeatedly criticised management in recent months.

While Nike has encroached on Adidas’s home territory, the German firm has failed to make serious inroads in North America. firm extended its lead to take a 15 percent global market share in 2013 compared with 10.8 percent for Adidas, according to Euromonitor.

Nike has focused on exploiting social media to target young consumers, while Adidas has relied more on official partnerships with the likes of the FIFA World Cup and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Nike’s animated film “The Last Game”, featuring soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar on a quest to save football from the hands of a villainous mastermind, has become one of Facebook’s most shared posts ever.

“Nike is the cheeky challenger doing guerrilla ambush marketing, whereas Adidas follows the more orthodox line,” said Andrew Walsh at sports marketing research group Repucom.

The value of the Nike brand rose 13 percent in 2013 to $17 billion, making it the world’s 24th most valuable brand, according to consultancy Interbrand, more than double the value of Adidas on $7.5 billion.

Even though Adidas was thought to have forked out about $100 million to FIFA to sponsor the World Cup, two Nike World Cup ads are among the top 10 most shared ad videos so far this year, according to marketing technology company Unruly. No Adidas videos feature in that ranking, though it says its videos published during the tournament made it the most viewed sports brand on YouTube.

“Quite a lot of people thought Nike was the official sponsor. They manage to get the benefits without as large an upfront investment,” said Leah Donlan, marketing lecturer at Manchester Business School.

Adidas has started to replicate Nike’s tactics, setting up a “news room” in Rio during the World Cup to generate a stream of social media chatter on its sponsored teams and players. Investment in social media will be a big part of its increased marketing spending and it plans to open similar news rooms in key cities around the world to continue its engagement with fans.

But Nike is also investing, launching an interactive Football app. It is kitting out more of Europe’s top clubs, such as Barcelona and Paris St Germain, for the 2014/15 season, even though Adidas is ousting Nike at Manchester United and Italian champions Juventus from next year.

Adidas CEO Hainer said the record $1.3 billion shirt deal struck with Manchester United last month almost three times per year what Nike has been paying the former English champions and the signing of four of the top six National Basketball Association (NBA) draft players showed he meant business.

“We have three out of the four biggest symbols in the football club world with Real (Madrid), Bayern (Munich) and ManU. This gives us huge reach,” he said, predicting the ManU deal will generate sales of 1.5 billion pounds ($2.5 billion).

But not everybody is convinced.

“The ManU deal is too expensive. It might bring management top line growth and exposure in emerging markets, but means that the expected margin improvement will be delayed,” said Stefan Guenter Bauknecht, fund manager at Deutsche Asset Wealth Management, which holds a 1.4 percent stake in Adidas.

“The strategy has changed from profitable growth towards building up the top line and the brand image against Nike.”

Adidas acknowledges it has cut its 2014 target for its operating margin operating income as a proportion of sales to between 6.5 and 7.0 percent for 2014, from 8.5 to 9.0 percent, partly due to higher marketing spend.

Nike recorded an operating margin of 13 percent in the fiscal year to May 31.

“We know driving higher levels of profitability is absolutely critical to our long term success, and we will get there. But we will not get there if we are not constantly winning in the marketplace,” Hainer said.

timberland steel toe Aegon Religare launches KILB II with a teaser campaign

Insurance brand Aegon Religare, which had launched a catchy campaign urging people to guard themselves against the ills of under insurance or ‘Kam Insurance Lene Ki Bimari’ (KILB) in 2008, has now released a sequel about inadequate insurance cover.

The teaser campaigns ran across media before the revealer, later exposed on January 16. The first teaser television commercial was a 10 second one in which Khan played a shoe salesman, offering his customer a very small pair of shoes, while the second one showed Khan play a waiter in a fancy restaurant, providing a very small napkin to a customer.

The outdoor campaign has Irrfan holding miniatures of a helmet, a pair of sunglasses and a cup of tea. ke sang jiyoge? Aadat badlo.’

Commenting on the proposition of the campaign, Pradeep Pandey, director, branding and communications, says, “Our launch campaign in 2008 was extremely successful. KILB as a concept is a long lasting proposition and we wanted to maximise its potential. Hence, we decided to do a sequel to KILB, similar to the movie style of sequels. We have launched KILB II also with a teaser.”

The brief to the agency was to highlight the issue of ‘inadequate cover’ and its probable repercussions. Another objective is to remind people of KILB again. In line with the brand’s identity, the tone and manner of the campaign is educative, where Khan plays the role of a concerned, friendly guide.

Discussing the idea behind the campaign, Pandey says, “The earlier campaign introduced KILB as a disease which one should get rid of. But, there’s still a significant part of the population which is under insured. We are now putting this across in a new way.”

According to Pandey, while lifestyles have changed and salaries have increased over the years, people do not worry much about increasing their insurance cover and continue with what has been in the past. “We want to reinforce the idea that with better lifestyles, one must also pay attention to being sufficiently insured. Therefore, there was a need to create a buzz about the habit and carry across the ‘aadat badlo’ message, thus spurring them to action.”

The lead medium used as part of this campaign was television, followed by outdoor, radio, print and the internet. While the campaign was conceptualized by Ogilvy India and the commercials produced by Apocalypso Films, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the media agency that handled the outdoor was Bates 141, with television, print and radio being handled by MediaCom and the internet by Media2Win.

The outdoor campaign has been executed across 64 towns where Aegon Religare Life Insurance is present. Outdoor is being used to create frequency with a mix of hoardings, bus shelters, unipoles and mobile media such as bus backs, side panels, full bus wrap, train wraps and trams. The campaign will run for four six weeks.

SEX And The City’s Carrie Bradshaw begins another chapter of her rollercoaster love life when the movie adventures of the shoe loving New Yorker reach our cinemas this month.

But actress Sarah Jessica Parker, now living happily ever after with actor Matthew Broderick and longing to spend more time with their young son, says even disastrous romantic relationships are a blessing in disguise.

And she refuses to regret her own turbulent live in romance with actor Robert Downey Jnr, despite his drugaddict lifestyle at the time.

The star started dating the actor, now enjoying the best reviews of his life for Iron Man, after they met on the set of Firstborn in the Eighties.

Robert publicly fought his drug habit during their seven year relationship, which ended in 1991.

But Sarah Jessica has no regrets over the affair, insisting it made her a better person. “Yeah, I probably made some wrong choices,” said the 43 year old.

“But I’m glad that I have, because you make better choices afterward. You don’t want to get it right so early in life, because it’s all in front of you.”

Sarah Jessica later went on to date John Kennedy Jnr before finally marrying Matthew in 1997.

It’s the kind of settled relationship that Carrie has always longed for in the long running TV series.

But Sarah Jessica doesn’t take her marriage for granted. The couple have had so many ups and downs, she often wonders if Matthew, 46, has second thoughts about their relationship.

“I’m really lucky that he is the father of my son, but that doesn’t mean that we always agree on everything,” she said. “We’ve had some rather treacherous train rides.

“I’m happy to be with him regardless, but I’m sure there are many times he wishes he wasn’t with me.”

Sarah Jessica revealed their arguments are mainly about how to raise their son James Wilkie, five. But she’s still head over heels in love with Ferris Bueller star Matthew.

“It’s a real privilege to be a part of our marriage,” she gushed. “Sometimes, I’m better at it. Sometimes, I’m really bad at it.”

Matthew, on the other hand, has a simpler view of the benefits of living with Sarah Jessica.

Asked what marriage had brought into his life, he quipped: “Nice soap.”

Meanwhile, Sarah Jessica admits that although she’s settled with Matthew, she hasn’t stopped fancying other men, especially silver foxes.

“I still have little crushes on men 20 years my senior,” she said. “French President Nicolas Sarkozy is a perfect example. I really like him because he’s very attractive and very interesting.”

OTHERS might find the pocket sized politician a controversial sex symbol, but then Sarah Jessica herself divides opinions.

Termini founded Mark Termini Associates Inc. in 1986 and has negotiated more than $400 million in pro sports salaries. He has represented 15 first round picks in the NBA and served on the Agent Advisory Committee to the National Basketball Players Association for the 1993, 1997 and 2003 NBA collective bargaining negotiations.

When Paul left CAA, several agencies tried to recruit him. He’s the hottest name in sports agents, and his client list continues to grow. He recently added Wizards forward/center Kevin Seraphin to his already growing list, which includes Cavaliers forward/center Tristan Thompson, Los Angeles Clippers point guard Eric Bledsoe, Wizards forward Michael Kidd Gilchrist and Spurs guard Cory Joseph.

Termini will continue to run his agency and represent Nuggets center Kosta Koufos and several players overseas. His existing clients will not become part of Klutch Sports. The two companies will remain separate entities.

Termini adds impeccable credentials to Paul’s upstart firm and is considered a valuable addition.

Paul is a longtime friend of James and was a member of his so called “Four Horsemen” and LRMR marketing team. He became James’ agent in 2012. Previously, James was represented by Aaron Goodwin and Leon Rose. James can become a free agent in the summer of 2014 and there has been growing talk of him returning to the Cavs. Paul could orchestrate that return.

After James announced to the world he was taking his talents to South Beach on “The Decision,” Paul was the only person in James’ entourage who bothered to call Cavs owner Dan Gilbert to inform him of the news. That went a long way with the Cavs.

The Cavs and Paul reconnected during the 2011 draft when the team selected Thompson with the No. 4 overall pick. There could be another meeting of the minds in 2014.

Reaching out to Gilbert after James left for the Miami Heat was all about respect. That’s one reason Paul has joined forces with Termini, who has a lot to offer a young agent. Until a month and a half ago, Paul had never met Termini, but he respected him from afar. Now, they’ll work together on contractual matters and see where the relationship grows.

The Cavs have an open roster spot and are in need of a center. Canton Charge center Micheal Eric has recorded back to back games of 14 rebounds for the NBA Development League team. Could he be headed to Cleveland? That would be a logical and conservative way to fill the spot. One out of the box move would be to sign 7 foot center Greg Oden to a two year deal and hope it pays off down the road. He might not be able to contribute this year, but it could pay off in a big way next season, when the Ohio State product could be recovered from knee surgery.

The Cavs’ front office should be commended for claiming journeyman guard Shaun Livingston on waivers on Christmas Day. He’s barged his way into Coach Byron Scott’s rotation. He could be this year’s Alonzo Gee, who bounced around the league before finding a home in Cleveland. This might say a lot about the lack of leadership on the team, but Livingston is not afraid to speak up and say some things in huddles and off the court. He’s quickly become a leader, as well as a solid player. He doesn’t put up big numbers, but rarely makes mistakes. 21 deadline: Atlanta forward Josh Smith, Memphis forward Rudy Gay, Utah center Al Jefferson, Indiana’s Danny Granger, Phoenix center Marcin Gortat, Toronto center Andrea Bargnani, Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings, Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe,

Sacramento center DeMarcus Cousins and Boston guard Rajon Rondo. Hickson has really found a home in Portland. Hickson, a first round pick of the Cavs in 2008, is playing well. However, he might not have found a home in Oregon. According to Comcast Sports Net Northwest, Hickson’s name has been kicked around in trade talks. Hickson signed a one year, $4 million deal and he has the power to veto any trade. If he approves a deal, he will lose his “Bird” rights. It would have to be the right team and the right situation for Hickson to give up his rights. “It’s also exciting to play on this team that everybody counted us out at the start. We’re making a lot of noise in the Western Conference. I’m trying to make this playoff run if I’m here after the trade deadline. Obviously, I’ll be happy either way because I can veto any trade.”

If the Los Angeles Lakers don’t make the playoffs, there is some speculation that General Manager Mitch Kupchak could lose his job. He said recently he’s not sure they’ll be active at the trade deadline. “We don’t have many options,” Kupchak told the LA Daily News. “It’s not like we’re going to be active or overly active in the trade market.” The Lakers owe $29.85 million toward the luxury tax and Kupchak probably would want to bring back less money if he does make a trade.

Smith, who was suspended for one game this week for “conduct detrimental to the team,” has not asked for a trade, agent Wallace Prather said. Smith will be a free agent on July 1. Some possible destinations are Dallas, Houston and Memphis. “I want to be clear that I’m not pushing a trade,” Prather said. “This is not a trade request or anything, but there are frustrations in Atlanta.”

Bledsoe is expected to attract serious attention with the trade deadline looming. Teams have watched him in the starting lineup as of late after the recent injury to Chris Paul. Ex Clippers general manager Neil Olshey (now in Portland) refused to give up Bledsoe in the Paul deal with New Orleans. Now, two of the best point guards in the league are on the same team. One reason the Clippers could hold onto Bledsoe is the fact that Paul will be a free agent this summer. They are confident that he will return, but one never knows. Bledsoe, who was taken with the No. 18 overall pick in 2010 out of Kentucky, has one year remaining on his rookie contract.

NBA scouts will be forced to scout the Salt Lake (Utah) Community College men’s basketball team, which is off to a sparking 17 2 start. Among the players on the Bruins, winners of 13 in a row, are sophomore guard Tyrell Corbin, freshman guard Gary Payton II and sophomore forward JuWan Buchanan. Corbin’s father is Jazz coach and former Cavs swingman Tyrone Corbin. Payton is the son of ex NBA great Gary Payton. Buchanan is the nephew of former NBA All Star and Cavs standout Shawn Kemp. The trio, coached by Todd Phillips, hopes to lead SLCC back to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament for the first time since the Bruins won the national title in 2009.

Aging feet require comfort, though style still sells

Manufacturers are responding to the needs of women who are demanding more from their footwearThe Middle AgesStaying young, growing old and what happens in between

Now that almost 40 million women are getting to be the age where their feet hurt when they slip into designer shoes, it’s the shoes that are changing. Baby boomer women still love their stylish footwear, but some of them are now dealing with unpleasant conditions like hammertoe and Morton’s neuroma, a painful nerve disorder.

“These aren’t found in men,” says Dr. Brent Tabor, a Gaithersburg based podiatrist, who blames those deliciously pointy toes and stiletto heels for creating foot problems. Even if you don’t have such serious conditions, as you get older, you may suffer from bunions or simply notice that comfort matters more than it used to.

Alma Belthea, 56, a schoolteacher who lives in Elkridge, now at least sometimes puts comfort over high fashion. She loves top quality Italian shoes; when she moved recently, she was shocked to find she had “about 20 pairs of Ferragamos, six pairs of Balis and 30 pairs of Bruno Maglis.”

But she’s started wearing Aerosoles at work because, she says, her feet are “elongating,” and she craves the comfort.

The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons has also warned against the double whammy of wearing narrow toed dress shoes to work and pounding the pavement when you run. Boomer women, famous for exercising long past the age previous generations did, should take note.

There is good news. It used to be women had to sacrifice comfort for style. That’s changing. A couple of years ago, Comfort One Shoes, a regional chain that has several stores in this area, switched its motto from “The World’s Most Comfortable Shoes” to “A World of Style.” OK, it may not be the sexiest motto; but it does reflect a shift in emphasis for the store.

“We were getting a big call for more fashion forward, but still comfortable shoes,” says Shawn O’Neill, the company’s vice president.

Once known for its Birkenstocks and other casual, bohemian comfort shoes, Comfort One now also carries expensive, dressier lines from Europe like Thierry Rabotin, Trevata and Ara.

You won’t find excessively pointed toes. One of the characteristics of even designer comfort shoes is a wider “toe box” with a bit more wiggle room,
blue timberland boots Aging feet require comfort
and narrower heels so the shoe doesn’t slip in back. There’s also more arch support.

“The heels don’t lift you up and throw your foot to the front of the shoes,” says O’Neill. “They lift you up and rest you on your arch.”

If you’re one of those women who wouldn’t be caught dead in a comfort shoe store, even if its motto has changed, no worries. These days, comfort shoes with cachet can be found in high end shops that would never have thought of carrying such styles in the past.

Jody Kesner, manager of Joanna Grey Shoes of London, a designer shoe store in the Village of Cross Keys, says her customers are “demanding comfort, but still want to look young.”

Among other lines, Joanna Grey carries Taryn Rose, a luxury shoe collection designed by a woman trained as an orthopedic surgeon. Kesner calls them her “omigod shoes” because women are so surprised at how comfortable they are.

“They are pricey,” she says, “in the $400 range, but women are willing to pay for comfort.”

The biggest difference, Kesner notes, is that designer shoes have much more padding these days. “More cushioning in shoes makes a big difference for aging feet.”

But you will still find plenty of heels.

Tabor, the podiatrist, argues that no heel is a good heel. “When you wear even a small heel, the foot has a tendency to push forward.”

Besides the negative things he has to say about very pointed shoes, which he advises women “to avoid with a passion,” he recommends wedges when they need to wear dressier shoes.

“They have the most support. Most of my patients do best in those,” he says. “In general, women’s dress shoes are not good.”

If your feet are narrow, he adds, you’re lucky although you may not feel that way when you shop for shoes and can’t find them in your width. “Women with a very narrow foot tend not to have problems.”

As for those staples of summer, flip flops and clogs, they can help with pain in the back of the heel; but the flip side (no pun intended) is that they are unstable, so they can create their own foot problems. Tabor recommends limiting their use during a day.

Still, many women will probably always give up total comfort for a great look. It’s just that, these days, it’s easier to combine the two.

“Let’s give big boomer headlines to Taryn Rose as well as Cole Haan with Nike Air Technology for addressing function, design and fashion,” says Tom Julian,
blue timberland boots Aging feet require comfort
a nationally known fashion trend analyst. “I know that many retailers today realize that the shoe can be engineered as well as fashion designed.”.

Skip to main content. Census Bureau estimated more than $120 billion in sales of retail clothes and shoes for the year as of July 2011 (seven months of data). A store owner in this bustling business experiences some tough challenges but also enjoys noteworthy benefits.

Solid Markup Percentage Advantage Clothing and shoes are two products that often have a fairly high markup percentage (the amount charged over cost) compared with other types of retail items. The markup for retail clothing is particularly high for well known or designer brands. This leaves a shop owner with plenty of room to make a profit after costs.

Little To No Licensing Requirements Advantage To run certain types of businesses, the owner must jump through hoops to get the proper certification and licensing. For instance, food restaurants must apply for food permits and submit to regular health code checks from the city or county. An owner of a clothing store does not have to worry about these types of regulatory issues. Generally, the main concern for a clothing shop owner is to get a sales tax permit (required in many states) and a basic business registration to display in the store.

Shrinkage Disadvantage A clothing and shoe store is at a high risk for theft. Theft, or shrinkage, occurs both on the retail floor and in the stocking room at some stores. Shrinkage is expensive to the business and difficult to track down. Shop owners must invest in security personnel, surveillance equipment and loss prevention systems to manage the problem.

Dealing With Leftovers Disadvantage It is difficult to predict the demand for shoes and clothes. It is also difficult to return them for a credit to distributors. The styles, trends and seasons change so often in a clothing or shoe store that managing large amounts of unsold inventory is common. A store with too much unsold inventory must sell items on clearance, sometimes at a loss, or give them away to make room for new clothes. Her work can be found on various websites. She has a small business background and experience as a layout and graphics designer for Web and book projects.

Getting into step for the spring 2001 fashion season, Aerosoles breaks six new ad executions in a $2 million print effort in March women’s magazines, including Vogue, O, The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Lucky, Glamour, Self, Marie Claire and InStyle.

“It’s a new image breaking for the brand, and all part of the same plan,” said Lisa Ellner, account director and partner at Aerosole’s agency, Gotham, New York.

The ads are new executions of an effort that began late last year, but the buy, 36 pages, represents a 300% increase over ad pages bought in December through May of last year.

The jump goes to support Aerosoles’ new, modernized look, revamped streamlined logo and younger target audience. “Let yourself go,” reads the company’s new tagline. Gotham won the account in July; it had previously been handled in house. and 50 outside the country. “Our campaign is in celebration of empowered women and their life situations and a woman’s love affair with shoes. The edgy taglines are fun and celebrate what we’re all about comfort and a sense of style.”

ATTITUDE AND INDULGENCE

The ads feature spring footwear fashions, focusing on warm weather sandals accompanied by provocative taglines such as “Cheaper than therapy.”

“I think the most successful execution is Rebel with a pedicure,’ which shows some attitude and indulgence. We’re telling women that with what you choose to wear, you can enhance a different part of your character,” said Lynn Giordano, chief creative officer at Gotham. “The overall brand line Let yourself go’ is just acknowledging the fact that indulgence, women and shoes go hand in hand. We tried to tell people

in fun, provocative ways that

fashion and comfort can work together.”

Products shown in the March ads are shipping to distributors now, with an approximate price point from $30 to $60. The campaign focuses on print and outdoor advertising rather than broadcast. But Ms. Grayson said that budget wasn’t the only consideration.

“Through our research, we found that our target customer is focusing her attention in magazines, so we’re responding to that,” she said. “We’ve updated old favorites with fresh colors, fabrics and patterns, and the result is surprising and new. We’re still keeping in mind our older customer, but we’re thinking of our younger, more style savvy customers, too.”

To keep up with the label conscious consumer, Aerosoles has also introduced a signature “A” patterned fabric, along the lines of upscale logo designers such as Prada and Gucci. The fabric is incorporated into a new style of shoes that partner with the company’s new logo. M.

timberland shop belfast Adolescent misperceptions abound

mens timberland boots sale Adolescent misperceptions abound

Jan. 7, 2015) It’s true: teens are misunderstood. But apparently, teens themselves have dramatic misperceptions about what their peers are doing when it comes to sex, drugs and studying, possibly prompting them to conform to social norms that don’t exist.

That’s according to new research that shows adolescents overestimate the amount of drug and alcohol use and sexual behaviors that many of their peers are engaging in. At the same time, they underestimate the amount of time their peers spend on studying or exercise.

“The behavior of all types of kids are grossly misunderstood or misperceived by adolescents, not just the jocks and the populars but also the brains and the burnouts,” said senior investigator Mitch Prinstein, John Van Seters Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UNC Chapel Hill, where the study was based and spearheaded by Sarah Helms, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab at the time.

“Adolescents tend to conform to stereotypes that we have seen in the Breakfast Club, but those stereotypes do not exist as dramatically as we once thought,” he said.

Comparisons between the groups, from what the individuals reported as their own behaviors to what others thought of them, clearly resulted in what the study called “gross misperceptions.”

Even teens in the high status groups had exaggerated perceptions of their own group peers’ risky behaviors.

In the instance of cigarette use, students in the popular crowd reported that they smoked about 1.5 cigarettes a day in the past month, while others in and outside their group thought they smoked three cigarettes a day. Jocks said they didn’t smoke much at all but others estimated they smoked at least one cigarette per day.

Burnouts reported that they smoked about two to three cigarettes per day, but their peers pegged the perceived amount at a half pack to a whole pack of cigarettes a day.

According to their schoolmates’ perceptions, jocks not only smoked more,
timberland shop belfast Adolescent misperceptions abound
they binged on alcohol more and had more sex than what the jocks reported as their actual behavior.

Burnouts faced similarly significant misperceptions: yes, they smoked relatively more marijuana than other groups but not nearly as much as what their peers thought they did. The burnouts were also wrongly presumed to shoplift and damage property more frequently and study less than what they reported in reality.

In fact, jocks and popular teen agers the two social groups seen as having the greatest potential of influencing others’ behaviors reported levels of sexual and legally deviant behaviors that were not significantly different from either the burnout or brainy groups, according to the study.

“The results of the study offers bad news for popular peers by demonstrating that they don’t party and have sex as much as people think they do,” said Prinstein.

On the other hand, the brainy crowd studied on average only about half the amount of time that their peers thought they did.

Since teens are sensitive to the judgment of their peers and often try to emulate the “cool kids,” researchers are working to better understand the role that peers play during this impressionable period. This particular study shed light on the extent of adolescent misperceptions as well as its implications.

A second prong of the study followed a group of 9th graders at a rural, low income school through the 11th grade to examine the link between adolescent perceptions of high status peers and adolescents’ own drug use.

Researchers found that the increases in substance use that high schoolers reported during the 2.5 year study for instance increases in cigarette, marijuana, and alcohol use was predicted by their perceptions of what the popular students were doing: That is, those who believed popular peers were engaging in these behaviors more in 9th grade were at higher risk, two years later in 11th grade, of engaging in the same behaviors. Those with higher perceptions of their popular peers’ substance use at the outset in 9th grade had steeper increases of their own drug use over time, suggesting that these misperceptions contribute to risk behavior.

“The implications . are troubling,” according to the study, which was published in November by the American Psychological Association. “Results suggest that adolescents have a caricatured perception of their peers’ behavior (perhaps especially so for high status peers) and are influenced by those gross misperceptions.”

The powerful effect of perceived norms was also seen in a series of other studies by Prinstein, Cohen, and their colleagues, published by the APA in September.

Using an experimental simulated chat room,
timberland shop belfast Adolescent misperceptions abound
the researchers found that high schoolers were highly susceptible to the risky norms set by popular peers even when these norms were experimentally manipulated rather than real life measures.

Moreover the 9th graders who thought their popular peers had high numbers of sex partners and who were highly susceptible to peer norms in this experimental chatroom were at the greatest risk of elevations in their risk behavior a year and a half later.

timberland custom boots AGING WITH CARE SUPPORT AVAILABLE WHEN ALZHEIMER

Linda Capers Wheeler for years kept a wilted rose on her desk, a symbol of her mother, Ada Capers.

“A rose, no matter what state it is in, is still a rose,” Capers Wheeler said. “When I look at the rose, I realize it’s changed. It’s more fragile. It will break if you handle it too roughly. But it’s still a rose. When I see it, I say that’s my Mama.”

So every day, when Capers Wheeler and her sister, Colyne C. Walton, get off the elevator on the sixth floor of the Deaconess Skilled Nursing Facility, they look for their mama.

They hug her and kiss her and talk to her and laugh with her. She will even return their smiles, pat them on the hand and return their affection.

But she no longer fills their minds with the wisdom from her 72 years. The meaningful conversations have ended. She no longer utters her pet phrases, filled with so much insight phrases like “Nothing fails but a try.”

Ada Capers represents an almost hidden phenomenon in Western New York. She’s an African American with Alzheimer’s, a degenerative brain disease striking roughly one of 10 people older than 65.

Research now shows African Americans are significantly more likely than whites by anywhere from 14 to almost 100 percent to develop Alzheimer’s.

“African Americans, on the whole, have a higher incidence of stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes,” said Annie Deaver Dabney, diversity outreach coordinator for the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter. “They’re all risk factors for Alzheimer’s.”

Perhaps even more troubling, many African Americans aren’t taking advantage of the professional services available to families coping with Alzheimer’s.

Capers is an exception. Her daughter, Capers Wheeler, helps run a support group for Alzheimer’s families and serves on the association’s board.

But there are thousands of local black families caring quietly at home, without outside professional help, for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s.

They probably could use the help, including the latest research findings, professional referrals, respite care and support groups. But the challenge is to find those families.

“My personal feeling is that, when people are caring for their loved ones at home, they need us more, not less,” said Linda W. Sabo, executive director of the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter.

The numbers are staggering. African Americans comprise 11.7 percent of the Western New York population. Given the greater incidence of Alzheimer’s in blacks, experts estimate that 15 to 20 percent of the roughly 30,000 Western New Yorkers with Alzheimer’s are black.

Yet local Alzheimer’s Association officials suspect that only 2 percent to 3 percent of the people seeking professional help for the disease here are African American.

Deaver Dabney, the diversity outreach coordinator, remembers attending the association’s Memory Walk in Delaware Park in September.

“I could count on one hand the number of African American faces, out of about 1,000 walkers,” she said.

It’s largely a matter of trust and comfort.

Alzheimer’s can be a touchy, almost embarrassing subject for many families. There are hygiene issues. Some people with Alzheimer’s wander away from home. Some families remain in denial, especially when the disease strikes the longtime caregiver in a family.

So it’s hard to reach out for help. And harder still when an African American family can’t find a black professional to make it a little easier to discuss these touchy issues.

Sabo, from the Alzheimer’s Association, has met with many predominantly black community groups.

“Time after time, they’d lean over and say, ‘I don’t want to hurt your feelings, but bring an African American in here to talk to us,’ ” Sabo recalled.

As a result, the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center provided a grant to fund Deaver Dabney’s halftime salary as diversity outreach coordinator.

Deaver Dabney noticed the same reaction that Sabo got, when she recently talked to a community group on Jefferson Avenue.

“I’m glad you’re here,” one person told her. “I’m glad they finally got somebody’s who’s black.”

There’s another reason it may be harder to get African American families to seek help in dealing with Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s strikes more women than men, largely because women still tend to live longer.

“In African American families, we have more women who are the head of the house,” Deaver Dabney said. “They tend to be the glue that holds the family together. To see the mother exhibiting childlike behavior, that’s devastating to the family.”

timberland online store Advantages of Giving Free Samples

Launch of new products is happening every day in some place or other. Launching of a product alone will not account to profitability. It requires proper promotion and marketing from the manufacturer side. There are many ways to promote new products, but most of the manufacturers use free samples as it is one of the most proved techniques in increasing the sale of new products. Free samples are normally distributed among potential customers, it can be in the form of products or services, but it comes free of cost. There is no doubt; any individual will get excited on seeing freebies. So manufacturers make use of this opportunity and at the same time customers get to check the quality of the product before buying it.

Giving free samples is used as promotional methods when new products are introduced in the market or when an already launched product is not doing well. There are some restrictions from the company side in giving away free samples. First and foremost, the company has to allot certain amount for free samples and within that amount, they should be able to attract the attention of potential customers. So the companies follow different methods in giving away free samples.

The most popular method is giving freebies along with a well established product. So when a customer gets a free product with the usual product they buy,
timberland pathlite Advantages of Giving Free Samples
they try it out and if they like its quality, then they will start buying it regularly. Similarly free samples of pharmaceutical products are handed over to Doctors by sales representatives. Thanks to the growth in technology, customers can access the company websites to get free samples. In this case, the individual has to provide their mailing address for the delivery of free samples.

Companies make huge profit by giving away freebies. The main advantage is, there is a huge increase in the customer base. Generally free samples are issued in small packs, so when the customers likes the products, they tend to buy full sized products. Another major advantage of these free samples is the provision of the brand uncertainty. Brand awareness is one of the factors that are considered while providing the customers with free samples. When a new line of products are introduced into the market and especially when it is a new brand,

there is some kind of awareness that is spread among the customers about the new product.

cheap timberland work boots afford shiny new shoes like finance minister

cheap timberland boat shoes afford shiny new shoes like finance minister

TORONTOSo, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has bought himself another pair of shiny new shoes as he gets ready to deliver another federal budget.

It a cute tradition and made for a good event up there at famous Roots, where they made him a special pair to size.

Interesting, though, is that the way things are going in Canada, buying a new pair of shoes for an important event or anything new for that matter may become a luxury of the past for many people struggling to make ends meet.

With people monthly income not rising as fast as their bills, many have to put stuff like that on their credit cards in favour of paying their high taxes and parking tickets.

With this in mind, why doesn Flaherty wear the same pair Thursday as he did last year just like most Canadians would have to do?

I know it symbolic to buy new shoes when delivering a budget, but not buying a new pair would be, too.

It may be a tradition but traditions change.

For example, the people who will be living under Thursday federal budget have seen their old normal replaced with a new normal.

The many commuters who spend two hours a day in rush hour traffic are an example of the new normal.

That was not a reality for hard working Canadians way back 50 some odd years when this silly shoe buying stunt began.

A coffee didn cost more than $2 and a tank of gas wasn $75.

Food prices were reasonable and it was affordable to send a kid to post secondary institutions.

Things have changed as Canadians are working to pay for the future guaranteed liabilities of some.

One of the biggest things that has changed is how a lot shoes, clothing or anything really is no longer manufactured in Canada but in the cheaper wage nations of the Third World.

It doesn translate in much savings for the consumer as it might in ensuring profit for both corporate Canada and the tax collecting governments.

Here another truth.

Canadians from coast to coast, for sure within the Greater Toronto Area, are cash strapped, overwhelmed, mortgage poor and in debt up to their eyeballs.

Governments municipal, provincial and federal are delivering less and slower service while imposing a higher tax rate.

We are seeing far more tolls,
cheap timberland work boots afford shiny new shoes like finance minister
levies and service fees added to highways, airports, train stations, bridges, medical benefits and a harmonized sales tax on just about everything.

Yet, there is no real cut in government size to reflect the added burden hoisted onto the taxpayer.

Now, to be fair, Flaherty, and the Harper government in general, has been more prudent than some of the Liberal governments of the past some of which downloaded so much onto the provinces and cities that they are now really handcuffed to be able to even properly operate.

But, still, as Toronto Sun reporter Terry Davidson pointed out, it sure was a sign of the times that a finance minister did a photo op at a great company like Roots which manufactures most of its goods offshore.

They did make Flaherty shoes here and they certainly make more in Canada than many do.

But it still speaks volumes of today offshore manufacturing realities.

One day it sure would be nice if things could go back to the way they used to be and things made in Canada were, in fact, made in Canada.

Somebody is going to have to pay the huge debt bill of the future and it won be the people of China, Bangladesh, Mexico and India who now hold many Canadian jobs.

timberland work boots steel toe Adolf Dassler Began Business in a Washroom

Adolf (Adi) Dasslerwas born November 3, 1900, in the small Bavarian town of Herzogenaurach in Germany. As a teenager, Adi would learn that work was hard to find after World War I. After the war, the 19 year old would decide to start his own business since there was little work, but Adi was innovative. In 1919, he would clean out his mother’s wash room and convert it into a work shop to build athletic shoes.

An avid sportsman himself, Adi knew there was a better way to equip track and field athletes than the foot wear that was currentlyavailable. He took surplus canvas material that was left over from the war and began designing spiked shoes so these athletes could keep their traction while running. Along with his brother Zehlein, who produced the spikes for his athletic shoes, Adi started manufacturing athletic shoes. In 1924, his older brother, Rudolf, would join him and his brother in the business. That is the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory was formed.

Even though his father wanted Adi to become a baker, manufacturing was in his bones. While his brother Zehlein made the spikes and older brother Rudolf performed all the administrative duties of the company, Adi loved spending his time designing footwear.

Adi would also spend a lot of time attending athletic events around Germany in an attempt to get athletes to wear his new shoes. In 1928, he and his brothers came up with a novel idea to promote their shoe business. Nearby Amsterdam was holding the summer Olympics. Since Adi had become so friendly with many of the local athletes that were participating in the games, many of them would wear his shoes during the competition. “The Olympics changed everything for my company,” he would later say.

During the early years of his business, Adi concentrated on just track and field shoes, but the Olympics changed his business. By the 1930s, he and his brothers were producing 30 different brands for 11 different sports and had moved into a factory where more than 100 people worked producing these brands. However, the business did not really get international recognition until the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

According to the story, Adi drove from his little medievaltown to Berlin to meet with Jesse Owens, an American athlete. There he would take Owens a suitcase full of his spiked shoes and convince Owens to wear them during the games. As history already knows, Owens would go on to win four gold medals and propelthe DasslerBrothers Shoe Factory to international prominence. “Without Jesse Owens record setting performance, our company would never have gained international popularity,” Adi would later say.

One day a year, men who care about the issues of sexual assault and domestic violence put on high heeled shoes and strut proudly along Hertel Avenue to raise money for Crisis Services.

Well, for almost all the men who came out Sunday, “strut” would be an exaggeration. “Stagger” or “struggle” would be closer to the truth.

Robyn Wiktorski Reynolds, director of Crisis Services’ advocate program, said about 325 walkers signed up for the 11th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event. Nearly $10,000 was raised online in advance, not counting the cash contributed on Sunday.

Larry Dispenza of Amherst wouldn’t have completed the walk without an emergency bandage stop.

“I’ve worn the skin off my pinkie toes. The balls of my feet are starting to blister up,” said Dispenza, who was helped out by Holly Franz, a sexual assault nurse examiner at Crisis Services. She rode the route on a motor scooter, offering Band Aids to those in need.

She and her team go to hospitals when rape victims check in. They help to collect evidence and assist with medical care. It’s one of the main activities of Crisis Services, located at 2969 Main St. Its round the clock victim hotline is 834 3131.

“Sexual assault and sexual violence are among the most under reported crimes in the United States,” acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Flaherty Jr. said as he limped along the street near the end of the procession. “Anything we can do to draw attention to that and let victims know that there are professionals dedicated to helping them, it’s a good thing. That’s why I’m here, to support our partners at Crisis Services.”

Flaherty’s red pumps might have looked more stylish on someone else in the legal community, such as Gabrielle Walter.

She’s a first year University at Buffalo Law School student who holds the title of Miss Bluebird, a regional beauty pageant crown that could lead her to the Miss New York crown in late May, and then on to the Miss America pageant. Thus, heels are just part of the deal for Walter, whose platform, no pun intended,
next timberland boots Aids after walking along Hertel in heels
is speaking up about campus sexual assaults.

She said a wedge with straps was a better choice for rookies, but Walter had no trouble walking the 12 block route in her crown, her sash and 4 inch peep toe shoes.

Officer Christopher Fisher of the UB Campus Police won the award for best shoes: a pair of heels with the police agency’s logo attached to the tongues of the shoes. He walked the whole route with State Sen. Timothy M. Kennedy, D Buffalo.

Kennedy said Crisis Services “acts as an oasis of support and resources to help individuals, put them in touch with health care and law enforcement, to provide them with that level of support and that hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Some of the men in the walk needed that encouragement, too.

Darryl Shannon, who played for the Buffalo Sabres from 1996 to 1999 and now lives in Amherst, represented the Sabres Alumni with relatively conservative black 2 inch pumps.

“It’s a challenge just standing here. My calves are already seizing up,” Shannon said before the walk.

Alexander Flaitz of Geneseo, a UB student who shared the crown in the pre walk Catwalk Contest, was wearing a 5 inch pair of white platform shoes, clearly 1970s disco attire. “I think that anybody who came out to show their support is obviously a brave human being, because heel injuries are serious things.”

“I am struggling a lot. This is very painful. I don’t know how women do this on a daily basis,” said Aditya Sidharth, a UB biotechnology major from India. He needed two other participants to help him to the finish line in his 3 inch pumps.

“But this is all for a good cause,” Sidharth said. “Domestic violence and sexual assault are a huge issue on college campuses, and also in my country, where rape is a big issue and it’s something that people are trying to fight. My legs hurt, I’m going to be blistering, I won’t be able to walk back home, but I know it’s all for a good cause and we need to help out.”

DAKAR/AGADEZ, Oct 13 (Reuters) When German Chancellor Angela Merkel toured three African nations this week for talks on curbing migration to Europe, the leader of the world’s poorest country, Niger, suggested it would take a “Marshall Plan” of massive aid to stop people coming.

Merkel politely declined the request, expressing concern about how well the aid would be spent and noting that, at a summit in Malta last year, the European Union had already earmarked 1.8 billion euros for a trust fund to train and resettle migrants.

But Niger’s President Mahatma Issoufou also proposed something perhaps more significant, in the long run, than a development package bringing Niger’s population growth down from 3.9 percent, the highest in the world.

Though he gave no details on how this could be achieved, demography clearly holds the key both to Europe’s migration crisis and to the African poverty feeding it. As long as population growth in African countries outstrips their ability to educate, house and employ their citizens, large numbers of people will continue to brave the deserts and seas to escape.

“You can’t resolve this by just paying money,” said Owoeye Olumide, a demographer at Bowen university in southwest Nigeria, one of the world’s most densely populated regions.

“There are going to be too many people .. the development you need will not be possible. You have to lower fertility rates and bring down population (by educating and empowering women).”

Niger, a vast, largely desert nation to the north of Nigeria, presents the starkest example of Africa’s challenges. figures. By then, Africa will have more than doubled its population to 2.4 billion, the United Nations says.

Frequent droughts in Niger cause hunger,
timberland bicester village Africa's population boom fuels
and low investment in education means a dearth of skills. They come from across Africa hoping to be smuggled to a better life in Libya or Algeria or over the Mediterranean to Europe.

In doing so, the migrants bring cash to Niger, a country that has repeatedly proved unable to feed itself.

Ousmane Diallo, 38, travelled for 10 days by bus from Sierra Leone on the Atlantic coast to Agadez, a Saharan town in Niger at the crossroads of the people smuggling business. He spent $700 on police and military checkpoints along the way.

His is precisely the kind of ambition the German chancellor would like to discourage.

“I want to work in a car factory in Germany,” he said in a dimly lit restaurant in Agadez, his few possessions spare trousers, shoes, water and a Bible crammed into a small bag.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) expects migration through the Agadez region this year to reach 300,000, more than twice the 120,000 it estimates came through in 2015.

EU officials hope to deter migrants like Diallo by making clear that life as an illegal immigrant in Europe is hardly better than staying in Africa. But that message has yet to filter down.

Diallo was swindled out of 150,000 CFA francs ($256) he paid smugglers in Agadez to reach central Libya. Desperate, he has given his last 50,000 CFA to a gang he hopes will come good.

“(In) Europe .. I can save and earn money. I cannot return back. I have nothing there,” he said of his native Sierra Leone.

In 2013, Niger’s corruption investigators did a study on smuggling that was never published, but which Reuters has seen. It said Niger’s security forces make almost half a million CFA francs ($850) from every round trip by a smuggling truck just from migrants alone, not including payoffs from the gangs.

Money changers and motor oil vendors throng the streets.

“Pretty much the whole population of Agadez now lives off providing services to migrants in transit,” said Richard Danziger, IOM regional director for West and Central Africa.
