Greenville police investigated a Dec. 4 fire at a student apartment complex that reportedly started when a man left a cigarette in an ashtray while he was showering. at 2209 Bellamy Circle. William Beaman told police he was on the balcony smoking a cigarette, left it in an ashtray and walked back in the apartment to take a shower.

Beaman told police he exited the shower to see what was going on after hearing screaming coming from a neighboring apartment and noticed smoke coming from the balcony. He the ran back in the apartment and got water so he could put out the fire.

He said he was able to put the fire out, but his neighbors contacted the fire department, which responded on scene shortly after police made contact with Beaman.

Responders at the scene did not find any embers, but water was on the balcony floor. Dec. 6: miscellaneous clothing and hair products all valued at $169.45 stolen from Walmart and recovered; arrest made. Dec. 6: Mountain Dew Kickstart energy drink valued at $1.79 stolen from Duck Thru; investigation ongoing.

Dec. 5: wallet, identification and Social Security cards, birth certificate, two Bank of America credit cards, Sam Club credit card, Walmart gift card and unknown type of credit card all valued at $15 stolen; investigation ongoing. Dec. 5: Singer sewing scissors and Otterbox Defender iPhone 6 case all valued at $52.88 stolen from Target and recovered; 37 year old man assaulted; extent of injuries not reported; case cleared by juvenile contact. Dec. 5: North Carolina license plate stolen; investigation ongoing. Nov. Dec. 4: two Moultrie M 880i trail cameras valued at $149 stolen from Walmart; inactive warrants obtained. Dec. 4: Nike Fast Run 3 tennis shoes valued at $80.24 stolen from Rack Room Shoes and recovered; case cleared. Dec. 4: Abu Garcia fishing reel and audio recorder all valued at $99.74 stolen from Walmart and recovered; investigation ongoing. Dec. 4: North Carolina license plate with gray plastic frame valued at $15 stolen; investigation ongoing. Dec. 4: tan Timberland boots valued at $133.75 stolen from Sears and recovered; arrest made.

600 W. Dec. 4: gray and black Samsung Galaxy S5 with light blue Otterbox case valued at $400 stolen; case inactive. Dec. 4: blue men shirt and seven pairs of men socks all valued at $114 stolen from Belk and recovered; case cleared.
